VINEMONT, Ala. – On Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, Vinemont Baptist Church will celebrate 100 years of service to its community.

As the congregation prepared, local historian, church member and former Vinemont Principal Dr. Jane Teeter shared the history of the church: “Vinemont Baptist Church was established from a Sunday school that began holding classes in the old Vinemont School building.  Rev. Luther Moye was invited to hold a revival at the school building the first week of August 1919.  Wednesday morning of that week of revival a motion was made by G.C. Burks to organize a Missionary Baptist Church at Vinemont.  The motion was carried and Vinemont Baptist Church was organized with 17 charter members.

“In the fall of 1919 the Vinemont Baptist Church was accepted into the Cullman County Baptist Association.  The old Vinemont School building was purchased by the church for the sum of $425.  A new roof was added and arrangements were made for lighting so that worship services could be conducted at night.

“An adequate water supply was secured by digging a new well in 1922.  During the 1930s, the church land was used for growing cotton.  Many people in the church provided the labor for the production of the cotton crop.

“Before the summer of 1931 was over, there were over 50 new members who joined the church.  On March 20, 1949 under the leadership of Rev. Chester O’Neal, a new church building was begun.  It was decided to dig the basement, pour the cement, and let it stand as such until crops were laid-by.  Final occupancy of the new church was accomplished by the end of 1949.

“The next major addition to the church was in 1958 when an educational building was begun under the leadership of Pastor John Herndon.  The church has undergone several restorations during the years following.”

On Sunday, Aug. 18 the church will celebrate its 100th anniversary.  During the 11 a.m. worship service, Pastor Rev. Joey Smithson will recognize former pastors and former members.  Following the service, a dinner will be held in the fellowship hall.  All former members and friends of the church are invited to attend.
