HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The City of Hanceville is gearing up for its annual back-to-school bash, Kids’ Night Out. It will take place Friday, Aug. 2 from 6-8 p.m. at CW Day Park. Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long said first responders, helicopters, motorcycles and firetrucks will be there. There will also be free pizza and chicken sandwiches, bouncy houses and other activities.

The council continues to update the City’s employee handbook.

Councilwoman Kim Brown raised several concerns regarding the current handbook, saying, “We need to clarify and add some policies. We’ve talked about vehicle policies and we’ve talked about cell phone policies. I think we need to discuss it and I don’t think it’s something we can do in a set council meeting. There are too many things. We need to clarify a lot of things. It needs to be black and white.”

The council agreed to schedule a special meeting to focus on the handbook. The special meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30 at 6p.m.

The council voted to install of a new fire hydrant and 600 feet of water line at the end of Boyd Road. There are two homes on the street that right now are not within 1,000 feet of a hydrant and there will soon be more homes with the same issue as Shadow Brook subdivision is developed.

Councilman Charles Wilson explained, “We have done water lines in the past to get houses within 1,000 feet. You have to have a 6-inch line from the fire hydrant.”

The cost of the waterline project is not known, but the council agreed that the new fire hydrant was necessary. The new hydrant will have a cutoff valve to avoid water outages in the event the hydrant requires maintenance.

The council also approved the purchase of a $100 ad from the Hanceville Quarterback Club for the 2019 Hanceville Bulldog Football program. The City of Hanceville has purchased an ad for many years. Wilson abstained from voting because he is a member of the Quarterback Club.

Mayor Kenneth Nail was not present due to travel.
