WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Town Council on Monday night voted to fill its open seat with resident Ashlee Phillips. The Place 5 seat was left vacant after Michael Hall moved from the town of West Point. Phillips was not in attendance but is the granddaughter of council member Frankie Jones. He chose to abstain from the vote.

The council held its first readings regarding the annexation of two properties into the town limits of West Point. The residence of Danny Ponder at 5935 County Road 1114 and the residence of Tamesha Bean at 888 County Road 1123 are both being considered for annexation. The council will vote on the annexations at its July meeting.

“I’ve talked to several people and I’ve got some more annexations, but I just haven’t caught up with them to sign the papers,” Mayor Gerald Schafer said.

Town Attorney Dan Willingham stressed the importance of the annexations being completed and recorded before the upcoming census.

In other business, Jones raised concerns about the town’s food pantry. He said supplies are very low and the food pantry needs donations. The council hopes some area churches can help out during the summer months especially with kids out of school.
