CULLMAN, Ala. – Forty-one boats loaded with anglers from across Cullman County hit Smith Lake early Thursday morning and after a day on the water, the 2019 Cullman City-County Classic is in the books. The West Point Warriors defended their title from 2018 and hauled in a team weight of 40.25 lbs. to secure the trophy for another year. West Point anglers Ashlyn Shedd and Caiden Galbreath finished as the top individual both with 15.58 lbs. and hauled in this year’s big fish, weighing in at 6.21 lbs.

Galbreath knew early on that he and Shedd would have a chance at a great bag Thursday, especially after they made their first move on the water.

“We caught them all morning and hit our limit at about 8 this morning and started culling but after we got that big fish, we knew it was probably a done deal and that was at about 11,” Galbreath said. “We always fish worms and the first spot we had we couldn’t get anything, so we made a move and that’s when we started getting them, but worms are the key.”

Shedd and Galbreath hit the five fish limit early Thursday morning and the rest of the day they just had to decide which five they wanted to carry to the weigh-in. After reeling in the big fish of the day a few hours into the tournament, Shedd knew that they’d have a real shot at winning.

“At about 8 this morning we had our limit in the boat, so we started culling and then we got that big one and from then on we knew we had a pretty good bag,” Shedd said. “We just used shaky heads and worms all day. Up shallow, down deep, they were scattered everywhere today.”
