HANCEVILLE, ALA. — Wallace State’s men’s basketball team has clinched the Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) North Division championship.

The Lions secured the regular season title with a 66-57 victory over Bevill State on Thursday night, combined with a Shelton State loss on Thursday night.

Wallace State has won 11 games in a row in ACCC North Division play and 12 of 13, solidifying the third regular-season championship under coach John Meeks. The Lions (24-5, 12-1 ACCC) have earned one of the top seeds in the ACCC/Region 22 Tournament, which begins at Lawson State on March 5.

“It says a lot about our guys that we have stepped up and played well since early January. We’ve won games a number of ways, and we knew that was possible. Our returners have been leaders all season, and we’ve had certain freshmen to contribute to our success,” Meeks said. “We’ve also won the last three games without our leading scorer, which I think demonstrates our desire to win a championship.”

Sophomore Mike Johnson led Wallace State with 18 points against the Bears, hitting four 3-pointers. Johnson has scored at least 18 points in Wallace State’s last three games, picking up the slack with leading scorer Demarkus Lampley injured.

Freshman Markise Davis scored 16 points for the Lions, Chris Rollins had eight points off the bench, Jalen Hodges added seven points and Geordon Walker contributed six points and 13 rebounds.

Wallace State led 36-24 at the half.

Wallace State will seek its third conference tournament championship under Meeks next month.

“We can’t be satisfied with what we’ve accomplished. We’re in a position now to decide how long we want the season to last.”

Both Wallace State teams host Snead State on Monday, beginning with the women’s game at 5:30 p.m. It’s the regular season finale for both squads.
