HANCEVILLE – In Monday’s night-cap from the Cullman County Basketball Tournament, the varsity boys’ bracket officially tipped with a showdown between (4) Fairview and (5) Holly Pond and it was the Aggies that came out on top after four very competitive quarters.

The Aggies jumped out to an early lead after scoring the first five points of the game, but the Broncos battled back and a three-pointer from Kyler Chaney cut the Fairview lead to just 9-8 midway through the first quarter. Holly Pond finished the first on a big scoring run and led things 14-11 going into the second.

Both teams continued to trade one-point leads in the second quarter until the Aggies created a little separation with a shot from behind the arc that put them ahead 25-20 with just under two minutes to play in the half. Fairview maintained their lead and went into the half with a 29-23 advantage.

The third featured more of the same as the lead continued to change hands. Holly Pond’s Devyn Tankersley nailed a three midway through the period to tie the game at 33 and Parker Sellers followed him up with a three just before the third quarter buzzer to tie the game at 42 going into the fourth.

The final period was just as tight as the first three, with both teams moving in and out of the lead several times. Sawyer Daniel nailed a trey midway through the quarter to give the Aggies a 51-48 lead but another three from Holly Pond’s Brody Rowell tied the game back up at 53 with less than two minutes to play. Austin Jackson laid one in for the Aggies with less than a minute to play to go ahead 57-53 and that was enough for Fairview to hold off the Broncos and win it. Kyler Chaney netted a half-court shot at the buzzer, but Holly Pond came up just one point short, falling 57-56 to the Aggies.

Jackson led the Aggies with 19 points in the win, followed by Zane Miller with 12 and Austin Turner with 10. For the Broncos, Chaney led the way with 17 points, followed by Devyn Tankersley with 14 and Isaac Ludwig and Levi Boatright who each scored seven.

Fairview will be back out on the floor for the semi-final round Friday night at 6:15 when they take on the top-seeded Good Hope Raiders.
