HUEYTOWN – It was ground-and-pound along with a strong defensive stance from Hueytown that led to the Golden Gophers’ 42-7 win over Cullman (Class 6A, Region 7) Friday night, dropping the ‘Cats to 3-3 on the season.

The Golden Gophers scored early and often in the first half, including the first play of the second quarter on a long run to put Hueytown comfortably in the lead, 21-0.

Cullman came out in the second half and would not quit; Jayden Sullins, Ezra Burks and Max Dueland kept churning to keep the Bearcats moving toward positive yardage. Dueland took it into his own hands when he busted out for a first down.

Following a huge catch from Matt Brock on a long third down, the Bearcats kept the momentum moving toward Hueytown territory. On the next play Dueland found Sullins for a huge first-down pass completion to the Golden Gophers’ 38-yard line.

Hueytown quickly ratcheted up the pressure once Cullman entered the Golden Gophers’ side of the field, forcing a third-and-12. Dueland was able to connect with Dylon Wallace to bring up a fourth-and-5. A trick play from the Bearcats resulted in a fumble, and Hueytown recovered.

Cullman stood strong, holding Hueytown to a quick series before the Bearcat offense took the field at the 19-yard line. Hueytown forced a quick three-and-out and began its drive inside Cullman territory. The Golden Gophers needed just a handful of plays to tack on an additional touchdown, putting Hueytown up 35-0 with just under three minutes left in the third.

Cullman began its next drive from the 39-yard line, but the defensive front of Hueytown continued to prove its dominance in the middle of the field. Hueytown took less than a minute to put up another touchdown, putting the Golden Gophers up 42-0 to draw the third quarter to a close.

Sullins and Dueland did not give up, connecting on a pass to put the Bearcats on the board with just under 8 minutes remaining in the game to bring the score to 42-7, which would be the final for the contest.

Cullman drops to 3-3 on the season and will take on Athens at home at Oliver-Woodard Stadium next Friday.
