WEST POINT – West Point faced off against Curry in a huge region game at home Tuesday. In a game where both offenses lit up the scoreboard, the Lady Warriors looked for the win late, but their late rally fell just short in a 9-7 loss to the Lady Yellow Jackets.

Curry hit the run column first in its opening at-bats. Rae Hall hit a one-out double off starter Carlie Wilkins, then Kyndra Richard hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence to give the Lady Yellow Jackets an early 2-0 lead. West Point got a run in its opening at-bats with two outs. Olivia Ball lined a double to left field and later scored on a passed ball to make it a 2-1 ball game.

A lead-off single by Melissa Bishop, followed by a one-out single by Madeline Phillips, put Curry in business in the second inning. One out later, Bishop and Phillips advanced to third and second, respectively, on a Wilkins wild pitch. Keana Pearson then hit an RBI single to left field to make it a 3-1 Lady Yellow Jacket advantage. Braelee Quinn drew a one-out walk for the Lady Warriors in their home half of the inning. One out later, Sydney Sellers drew a four-pitch walk and Avery McClure tied the game at three with a two-run double to left field.

Richard hit her second home run of the game to give Curry a 4-3 lead to begin the third and added on to the Lady Jackets’ lead in the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Pearson and Hall, followed by a Richard walk, quickly put new pitcher Quinn in trouble early with no outs. Katherine Richards drew a four-pitch walk, then Laycee Cordell lined a two-run single to center field to increase the Lady Warrior deficit to four at 7-3. Richard added an RBI double in the sixth to make it an 8-3 lead for Curry.

West Point looked to start a rally with two outs in its half. Avery McClure reached on an infield single, then Gracie Abbott lined a two-run homer over the left field fence to make it an 8-5 game. The Lady Yellow Jackets added a run in the top of the seventh when Linley Tubbs scored on a Quinn wild pitch and the Lady Warriors went into their final at-bats trailing, 9-5. Makayla Brown led off the West Point seventh with a single to center field, then Hope Shedd lined a double to left field as they looked for a comeback late. Quinn made up for her wild pitch in the top half of the seventh with a two-run single to center field and West Point made it a 9-7 game, but the Lady Warriors didn't get any closer as they drop to 4-10-2 overall and 0-1 in the region.

McClure (one run scored) had two hits and two RBIs for West Point. Quinn and Abbott each had a hit, two RBIs and a run scored in the game. Molly Pendley, Ball, Brown, Shedd and Wilkins each collected a hit. Ball, Bethany Minck, Shedd and Sellers each scored a run. The Lady Warriors will take on the Lady Yellow Jackets at Curry on Thursday in search of their first regional win of the season.
