FAIRVIEW – It was a tough day for the Lady Aggies and the Lady Warriors as they both lost in the first round of the 2016 5A Area 12 Tournament, ending their respective seasons.

CURRY 3, FAIRVIEW 1

The host team, the Fairview Lady Aggies took the floor first against the Lady Yellowjackets of Curry and it was a slugfest. Curry scored the first two points of the match but Fairview fired right back with a pair of points to tie the set. The action went back and forth in the early going, with neither team being able to gain an advantage, until Curry’s Madison Pavlovee stuffed an attempted kill from the Lady Aggies. The play sparked a 9-1 run by the Lady Yellowjackets to open up a 15-8 lead. Fairview settled in and returned the favor, outscoring Curry 10-3 to take the lead back, 20-19. However, it was the Lady Yellowjackets who made the final run of the set, scoring six of the last seven points to take the first set 25-21.

Thanks in part to the stellar play of Rachel Yearwood, Fairview jumped out to an early lead in the second set, going up 10-5. The Lady Aggies kept the pressure on, not letting Curry get closer than five points as they took the second set 25-19. Curry started the third set with a flurry, going up 6-2 in the blink of an eye.  The Lady Yellowjackets held the lead through the entirety of the set, claiming victory 25-20 and putting the Lady Aggie’s backs to the wall.

In the fourth, and what turned out to be the final set, Curry again took the early lead. Up 10-3, the Lady Yellowjackets were content to trade points with Fairview, scoring the last three points of the match including kills from Kaylynn Freeman and Madison Bentley to take the set 25-19 and the match 3-1.

HAYDEN 3, WEST POINT 0

The second match of the day pitted the Lady Warriors of West Point against the Hayden Lady Wildcats. West Point started the set with a block from Josie Huckaby and kills from Mackenzie Carter and Molly Pendley. Hayden answered as the points flew from both sides of the floor in what looked to be an evenly matched set.  With the game knotted at 19, Harlee Kate Reid scored on a kill that started a 6-1 run, and ended with Hayden winning the first set 25-20.

Huckaby started the second set for West Point with a wicked kill, but Hayden fired back to go up 6-1. Meredith Calvert and Pendley helped to keep West Point close, but it was ultimately Reid who would seal the game for Hayden, giving the Lady Wildcats the second set 25-19. West Point came out swinging in the third set, taking a 6-2 lead but Hayden weathered the storm and clawed their way back. They eventually pulled even and overtook the lead. Down 24-21, and at the line to serve, West Point committed a fault by releasing the ball twice without serving, giving the point to Hayden. This was the winning point, as Hayden took the set 25-21 and the match 3-0

The Cullman Tribune would like to congratulate the Fairview Lady Aggies and the West Point Lady Warriors on their fine 2016 volleyball seasons.
