County School Board meets day after new session begins

CULLMAN – The Cullman County School Board began the 2016-17 school year with its first meeting Thursday night, a day after students returned to the classroom, ending summer vacation.

The board heard the first public hearing of the new session of the school budget, presented by Cullman County Schools Chief School Financial Officer Ed Roberson.

Contracts and salary changes were approved by the board to the following: Karla Billiott of Good Hope High, Savannah Funderberg of Hanceville High, Tammy Fowler of Cold Springs Elementary, Trina Walker upgraded to Education Specialist by the state and Stephen Chandler, upgraded to masters by the state.

Contracts for non-faculty coaches were approved for the new year. They are Caiden Bagwell and Whitten Hunt from West Point High; Taft Dillashaw, Tim Cofer and George Norton from Good Hope High; Rocky Montgomery from Good Hope Middle; Wendy Mann from West Point Middle; Phillip Robinson and Mandy Preiss from Vinemont High; Gregory Black from Fairview Middle and Claborn Campbell from Cold Springs High.

After-school programs were approved for Cold Springs Elementary, Fairview Elementary, Parkside School, Vinemont Elementary, Welti Elementary and West Point Elementary.

The board approved West Point High School’s request to pay Don Farley $1,500 for summer mowing and field maintenance.

Fairview High School received approval to pay coaches Wes Harden $1,000, David Martin $500 and Trett Hardman and Will Tidwell $200 for 2016 summer workouts. The money was provided by the school's booster club.

The following assistant principals were given approval to also coach during the 2016-17 school year. They are George Redding of Fairview High (football), Daniel Wakefield of Hanceville High (basketball) and Brett Barnett of Hanceville High (cross country).

The board approved the 2016-17 academic coaching supplements and assignments, the 2016-17 athletic coaching supplements and assignments and the 2016-17 salary schedule.

A system-wide bid for LP Gas was approved for Thompson Gas Company with a bid of $1.04 per gallon. Nelson Painting was awarded a bid to a painting project in the northwest area of Fairview High School for $1,500 with B&V Electric getting approval for a bid for $1,850 to conduct work on exhaust fans and lobby bathrooms inside the gymnasium at Good Hope High School.

A request to change a work order for maintenance at Cold Springs Elementary School was approved. The order was for a drainage system to be added to the existing gymnasium downstairs to the new storm pipe system in an adjacent building.

The maintenance department was given approval to proceed with construction of a strength/weight training room at Good Hope High School, using private donations.

The transportation department were given approval to pay Jim Alldredge and Quentin Posey for summer bus training at their regularly hourly rates.

Superintendent Shane Barnette was given approval to purchase Decision Ed software for the purpose of data collection and analysis. The software will provide quick access to data concerning students, teachers, administrators, programs and administrative processes within the district.

The next meeting of the Cullman County Board of Education will take place Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6 p.m. inside the central board office conference room. The public is invited to attend.
