HANCEVILLE – Wallace State Community College’s Continuing Education program will host an informational meeting on Wednesday, July 20 for anyone interested in learning about short-term health courses. These non-credit courses can be completed in 10 weeks or less and provide instruction in a number of entry-level healthcare professions. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on the ninth floor of the James C. Bailey Center.
“Through our short-term health programs, we’re able to provide an expedient pathway to students who are seeking quick entry into the medical field,” said Melinda Edwards, dean of Institutional Outreach at Wallace State. “These courses are also beneficial to current healthcare professionals who may need additional certifications to advance in their career.”
The courses offered include CPR for healthcare providers, Certified Nursing Assistant, EKG Technician, Phlebotomy and Physical Therapy Aide.
CPR courses for healthcare providers are offered twice a month for those needing initial certification or those needing to maintain their certification. The classes are held on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Call 256-352-7826 for specific dates. The fee for the class is $50.
The Certified Nursing Assistant course is a 10-week program that trains individuals how to assess patient needs and how to interact effectively with the patient. Students are also prepared to take the certification exam. Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesday from 5:30-9 p.m., with a 26-hour clinical rotation on three Saturdays at the end of the program. The course fee is $805 and includes the course textbook and insurance and exam fees.
EKG Technician is a comprehensive 50-hour program that prepares student to function as an EKG technician and prepares them for the National Certification exam. The upcoming fall class will run from Oct. 18-Dec. 8, with classes held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. The course fee is $999, textbook included.
Phlebotomy is a 7-week program that trains individuals to collect blood samples properly and interact with healthcare personnel. It also prepares them for the certification exam. Two sessions will be offered in the fall, Aug. 9 -Oct. 12 and Nov. 10 -Jan. 19. Classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The course fee is $1,599 and includes the textbook and exam fee.
Physical Therapy Aide is a 50-hour program that prepares students for the growing field of physical therapy. The physical therapy aide is generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical therapy at nursing homes, hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers and some orthopedic clinics. The next class will be held Oct. 17 -Dec. 17, on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. The course fee is $999, textbook included.
