Vinemont community grieving after area teenager is killed, another in serious condition

CULLMAN – The Vinemont community is grieving today after one area teenager was killed and another seriously injured in a late-night traffic incident.

The single-car incident happened last night, Saturday, June 25, on County Road 25 west of Bremen at approximately 10:45 p.m., according to a spokesperson with the Alabama State Trooper post in Decatur.

The passenger, Whitney Cotton, 17, of Vinemont was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle, a 2005 Mitsubishi Galant, was Anna Hughes, 17, also of Vinemont. Hughes is reportedly being treated at Huntsville Hospital and is in serious condition, although the extent of her injuries has not been disclosed. Both girls were reported to be cheerleaders at Vinemont High School.

According to the report from ALEA, the incident happened at a curve in the road, and at least one of the girls was not wearing a seat belt.

The incident is still under investigation. No official cause has been released.
