CULLMAN – The North-Central Alabama Young Democrats (NCAYD), a new chapter of the statewide Alabama Young Democrats, held their May meeting on Monday, May 9 at Moe’s Original BBQ in Cullman. Lasting a little over an hour, the meeting of the group of young leaders representing Cullman, Walker and Blount Counties brought fresh ideas and enthusiasm to the table.

With increasing the membership numbers of the fledging group listed as a main priority, members brainstormed about membership drives, establishing a presence within high schools and supporting local businesses with shared ideals.

In the hopes of beginning a high school level young Democrats group at Cullman High School, the state president of that faction will be contacted and put to work on the matter.

With plans in motion to host a membership kick-off party near the end of June but without a party site nor date yet to be established, suggestions of a pool party or BBQ were discussed.

After reviewing the endorsement policy, the attendees reiterated they “will not endorse any candidate during the primary, we will serve as a link between supporters and campaigns, but we will not endorse anyone until the primary is over and at that point we will endorse the Democratic nominee.”

Upcoming events voted on and approved included hosting a booth at the Cullman County Fair in September, entering a float in the fair parade, hosting a voter registration drive at Oktoberfest in Cullman and registering voters at the Jasper Fair. With even more registration events needed, members were requested to come up with new ideas before the next gathering.

“The mission of the North-Central Alabama Young Democrats is to provide resources, materials and training necessary to develop the Democratic leadership of Cullman, Walker and Blount Counties, to encourage involvement in the political process consistent with the principles of the Democratic Party, to support candidates and causes upholding those principles and to promote justice and social welfare in the North-Central Alabama region.”

NCAYD’s leaders, President Josh Coleman and Vice President Roger Duke, are both from Cullman County, while Treasurer Cody Brown is from Walker County.

June’s meeting will be held Monday, June 13 at 6:30 p.m. The location will be Garfield’s Restaurant and Pub located at 300 Highway 78 E, Suite 300, Jasper, Alabama 35501.
