MONTGOMERY– Cullman fought valiantly Thursday night, hitting two home runs, but fell one run short in a 7-6 loss to Oxford, the team they eliminated from the state tournament just last year.

After giving up three runs in the first, two on a costly error, Claire Jenkins crushed a two-run shot to straight away center field. Oxford came back to score two runs to take the lead back. Olivia Schwaiger tried to help her cause, blasting a three-run homer to give Cullman their first lead in the see-saw battle. However, it was Oxford that picked up the final two runs of the contest to take the game 7-6 and send Cullman to the loser’s bracket. Schwaiger pitched another great game, striking out 10 batters in the loss.

The Lady Bearcats will play at 9 a.m. Friday morning in a quest to claw their way to the championship game. Cullman will have to win at 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to force a 7 p.m. game for the title.
