GOOD HOPE – Tyler Yearwood of Fairview showed just how dominating a big man can be inside on Monday night when he scored eight of the Aggies first 17 versus Good Hope. Thanks to the play of Yearwood inside and the great shooting outside from Austin Fletcher, Fairview laid claim to an early 17-13 lead.

Fletcher continued to have the hot hand in the second, draining a three and getting a clean-up basket early in the quarter. He would add a free throw later in the quarter as Fairview outscored Good Hope 13 to 7 in the second and took a 30-20 lead at the halfway point.

Tyler Vanderburg led the Raiders in the third quarter, burying a three from the wing and converting the three free throws that followed after getting hacked on another three attempt. However, this was not enough as Fletcher hit a pair of trifectas in the quarter, giving him five on the night, and pushing the Aggie lead to 12.

With a 42-30 lead, Fairview was content to swap baskets with Good Hope for the entirety of the final quarter and heading home with a 50-37 win.

Lady Raiders

The Lady Raiders methodically controlled the clock in the first quarter Monday night. They took possession on the opening tip and moved the ball around the perimeter for two solid minutes before even attempting a shot. The patience paid off as Kate Kent hit a six-foot jumper to send Good Hope on a 10-2 run that forced a Fairview time-out. Out of the time-out, Fairview’s Desiree Wilhite hit an easy layup cutting the Good Hope advantage to six, 10-4, as the quarter came to a close.

It took six minutes for Good Hope to get their first points of the second quarter but it was worth the wait. The Lady Raiders rattled off eight points in the last two minutes to push the lead back to 10, a lead Fairview had spent the whole quarter trying to erase. Heading to the half, Good Hope held the 18-12 lead.

After a slow start to the third, Kaylee Maddox took the game over for Good Hope. She started the quarter with a two-point bucket and followed it up by drilling a pair of three pointers to help the Lady Raiders to a 31-21 score as they prepared for the fourth.

The fourth quarter was owned by the Lady Raiders. Good Hope extended their lead from 10 to 17 on the backs of Kent and Celeste Whisenant who dominated the blocks for Good Hope. Two back to back threes late in the quarter bought Fairview to within 11 but the Lady Raiders finished with a flurry, scoring five to Good Hope’s one to take the contest 46-31.

Fairview had a tough time finding the basket in the first, as did Good Hope but each squad came on late to end the quarter in a flurry of points. Fairview took the early advantage by five, 15-10.

The Raiders started the second with hit shooting but it was Fairview who finished the quarter on a 10-1 run to take a 27-17 lead to the locker room at the half. The Aggies opened up a sizable lead midway through the third quarter but the strong play of Good Hope in the last four minutes of the frame allowed them to cut the lead to a manageable seven points going to the fourth.

Good Hope dominated the early part of the fourth, going on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 35 with 3:24 left on the clock. They then forced a missed shot on the Aggie side of the floor and #13 came down to the other end to shoot a one and one, sinking the front end and giving Good Hope their first lead since the first quarter. However it was short lived as Fairview immediately took the lead back. The two teams traded points for the next two possessions but then the Aggies were able to string together back-to-back shots and putting Good Hope in a position where they were forced to foul. The Aggies hit enough of their shots from the charity stripe to outscore the Raiders 13-9 down the stretch to take the game 48-44.

The game started with points pouring in from both teams. Good Hope opened the game on a 5-0 run before Fairview could get set. However the Aggies responded with a 10-3 run to take the lead with 2:14 left on the quarter. The points stayed even for the rest of the quarter with Fairview holding the 14-12 lead after the first quarter.

The Raiders opened up the second quarter with a 7-0 run that put them in control of quarter number two. The Aggies tried to make a run at the Raiders but the inside play of Isiah Lemus kept Fairview at bay and allowed them to take a 23-18 lead to the locker room at half.

Good Hope built a 13-point lead going into the fourth but the Aggies never stopped playing and continued to pressure the ball. The full court press started to produce turnovers in the fourth to the tune of a 7-2 run that pulled the Aggies to within eight with 3:45 left to play. Good Hope found themselves in the bonus one play later but could not convert on the front end of the one and one. Fairview continued to apply the pressure and convert turnovers into point, cutting the Raider lead to three with 1:33 left on the clock. Three points was as close as the Aggies would get as Good Hope converted four free throws down the stretch to take the game 47-40.
