CULLMAN, Ala. – Plans for new cabins and storage buildings at Stony Lonesome OHV Park will go before the Cullman County Commission on Tuesday, Oct. 20, as commissioners consider awarding three contracts tied to a federally funded improvement project.

The proposed awards would select Adams Building Co. LLC for separate contracts covering standard cabins and accessible cabins. A third contract, for metal storage buildings, would go to Burks Building Inc., according to the meeting agenda.

The work is part of improvements supported by a $711,539 Recreational Trails Program grant announced in August 2025. As The Tribune previously reported, the announcement also listed a $177,539 local contribution from Cullman County.

The original grant announcement called for eight prefabricated cabins, storage facilities, a small rescue vehicle and a drone to assist with rescues.

Storage was planned both for park equipment and for visitors to keep all-terrain vehicles and campers on-site. Revenue from cabin and storage rentals was intended to support park upkeep and trail development.

For the current contracting round, the county’s published bid notices sought two accessible manufactured cabins, including installation, and the manufacture and installation of six metal pole barn buildings. The notices set an Oct. 13 deadline for bids.

Commissioners will also consider a separate resolution rejecting a bid for security chain-link fencing at the park. The agenda cites noncompliance with bid requirements but does not identify the bidder or explain the deficiency.

The cabin and storage building awards remain subject to commission approval. The posted agenda does not include contract amounts, construction start dates or completion deadlines.

The Recreational Trails Program receives funding through the Federal Highway Administration and is administered in Alabama by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs.

Stony Lonesome opened in 2009 with assistance from the program and received another grant in 2021 for trail construction and maintenance equipment.

The park is located at 10075 Alabama Highway 69 South in the Bremen area of Cullman County.

Tuesday’s commission work session is scheduled for 4 p.m., followed by the meeting at 6 p.m. in the Commission Meeting Room at 500 Second Ave. SW in Cullman.
