James (Jimmy) Harwell Smith, Jr. of Cullman, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026, at the age of 85.
Jimmy, or “Smitty” as he was known to many who loved him, was a loving husband, father, brother, son, and friend to all who knew him. He was an avid outdoorsman with a lifelong love for horses and hunting. He also cherished his time at the lake, where some of his happiest moments were spent on Smith Lake, making memories with family and friends.
Jimmy was an incredible storyteller. He had a gift for telling a story and bringing it to life in a way that only he could, leaving those around him entertained and often wanting to hear just one more. Whether enjoying the outdoors, spending time with those he loved, or sharing one of his many stories, “Smitty” had a special way of making those around him feel a part of the moment.
He grew up in Cullman and spent many summers visiting his grandparents in Tennessee. He graduated from Cullman High School in 1959 and continued his education at Florence State University, later known as the University of North Alabama, where he played football and ran track.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents, James Harwell and Grace Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Sticher Smith; son, Brad Smith (Cheryl); grandsons, Sticher and Lane; sister, Deborah Cox (Ernie); nephew, Adam Kennedy; and niece, Rachel Kennedy.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hope Horses or a local charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 3 p.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the service.
