CULLMAN, Ala. – Applications are now open for the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP), offering eligible low-income seniors in Cullman County and throughout Alabama a $50 benefit card to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from certified farmers at local farmers markets and farm stands.

The program helps seniors access locally grown produce while supporting area farmers.

Funding is limited and benefits are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis until available funds are committed.

To qualify, applicants must be 60 years of age or older on the day they apply and meet the federal income eligibility guidelines.

SFMNP generally uses the USDA standard that household income cannot exceed 185% of the federal poverty level, meaning a single senior’s household income must fall at or below that threshold to qualify.

If a senior lives with others, combined household income must also meet the guidelines.

Applications are available online at www.agi.alabama.gov/farmersmarket.

Seniors who need assistance completing the application may call the North Alabama Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG) at 256-355-4515 for help by phone.

Seniors who received this benefit in a previous year must have their card from last year in order to reapply.
