Obituary: Bobbie Lavell Messersmith

Funeral services for Bobbie Lavell Messersmith, 96, of Cullman will be Jan. 30, 2026, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Bussman officiating, with interment in the Cullman City Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 10 to 11 a.m.

Mrs. Messersmith died Monday, Jan. 26, at home. She was born July 17, 1929, to James LaFayette and Gertie L. Moore Graham. She retired from Cullman products but also worked at various factories during her lifetime such as Cullman Lingerie, King Edward and Gold Kist Hatchery. She also worked in the lunchroom at St. Paul’s School and Sacred Heart School. Bobbie has been a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church for most of her life. She was a member of the Ladies Aid and the “Jolly Sixties” fellowship group.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar Messersmith; four sisters, Margaret LaFaye Graham Teichmiller, Betty Ruth Graham Woodard, Ruble Inagene Graham Livingston; and a brother, James Thomas Graham.

She is survived by her son, Phillip (Karen) Messersmith of Alabaster, AL; a daughter, Kathy (Wendell) Burnette of Cullman, AL; four grandsons, Anthony (Amanda) Hill of Cullman, AL, Joshua (Krissy Green) Hill of Cullman, AL, Austin (Anna) Messersmith of Alabaster, AL, and Nathan Messersmith of Alabaster, AL: two granddaughters, Rachel Brauer of Cullman ,AL, and Tonia (Randy) Rogers of Vinemont, AL; Six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Jester (Bernard Gray), Alexzandria Hill, Valerie Hill, Cameron Hill, Cade Brauer, Kelsey Rogers and Clay Rogers; three great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and beloved friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 513 Fourth Ave. SE, Cullman, AL, 35055.
