Obituary: Hiram “Sonny” Brown

Hiram “Sonny” Brown, a faithful, generous, hard-working, loyal, and thoughtful man, passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on April 26, 1939, Sonny was a beloved resident of Cullman, Alabama. 

In his early years, Sonny played football for Cullman High School from 1955 to 1957, showcasing his dedication and team spirit. His career was marked by his ownership of Brownies Auto Service from 1957 to 1996, and he also founded White Dove Real Estate, leaving a lasting impact on his community. 

Sonny was a devoted family man, who loved his family deeply and enjoyed making people laugh. His personal interests included a passion for Alabama Football, fishing, and enjoying breakfast with his friends. He was also actively involved in working with the Children’s Ministry at Eastside Baptist, specifically the Bus Ministry. 

His commitment to his faith was evident as he served as a deacon at both Eastside Baptist Church and Northbrook Baptist Church. Sonny taught Men’s Sunday School at Northbrook Baptist for many years, sharing his love for his Lord and his testimony with others. Sonny was blessed to have been able to teach Sunday School for 52 years. He became a Christian in 1968 and was dedicated to serving his faith throughout his life. 

Sonny is survived by his daughter, Patty (Phil) Hutchens; granddaughter, Ashlee Hutchens (Matt) Kimpel; and great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Kimpel, Travis Kimpel, and Trevor Kimpel. He is also survived by his brother, Burns Brown. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dessie Brown, and his parents, Hiram and Evelyn Benefield Brown. 

Visitation will be held at Moss-Service Funeral Home, located at 1901 2nd Ave North West, Cullman, AL 350555827, on January 18, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The funeral service will take place at the same location on January 19, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. 

Sonny’s legacy of faith, generosity, and dedication to his family and community will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him.
