Gary Edward Holland, M.D., a beloved physician, son, father, grandfather, brother, significant other, and friend, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on August 26, 2025, at the age of 62. Born on April 11, 1963, in Birmingham, Alabama to Glen and Nancy Holland, Dr. Holland lived a life defined by hard work, dedication, and a resolute commitment to serving others.
Raised in Hueytown, Alabama; Dr. Holland graduated from Hueytown High School in 1981. He knew at a young age he wanted to serve others in the medical field. As the first member of his family to attend college, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama in 1985. Accepted into the first medical school he applied to, he went on to graduate from the University of Alabama Medical School in 1989. Dr. Holland’s journey into medicine was marked by a calling to heal and uplift those around him.
In 1992, Dr. Holland moved to Cullman, Alabama to join Cullman Internal Medicine where he began a 33+ year career serving as a physician for the Cullman community.
He left CIM in 2007 to serve at Urgent Care Center as co-owner through 2019.
During his tenure at CIM and UCC, Dr. Holland also devoted himself to Addiction Medicine helping individuals battling opioid addiction find hope and recovery. He served the remainder of his career working full-time as a Medical Director of suboxone treatment centers in the Cullman area. His work was more than a profession—it was a mission to restore lives.
Not only was Dr. Holland known for treating every patient with the dignity and respect they deserved, but also, he’ll forever be remembered by his charismatic wit and genuine compassion for those who sought his care.
Beyond his medical practice, Dr. Holland was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide football fan. He rarely missed a game and shared his love for the Tide (and disdain for a certain college) with family, friends and everyone he encountered. He cherished time spent with his children, especially grilling the perfect filet tenderloin for family gatherings – a tradition his family plans to continue. Among his favorite pastimes were excursions to historical sites across the country, visiting his daughter and son-in-law in Colorado, lunches with Theta Chi brothers, and workouts with the boys. Dr. Holland also loved playing golf with his brother, Kevin, and children, finding laughter and connection on the fairways. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and as a devout member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cullman, he lived his values of kindness and service daily.
Most importantly, Dr. Holland’s strength and fortitude rise above all to those who knew him and his story. His ability to face the adversity of glioblastoma without a single complaint or falter will remain an inspiration, and his unwavering faith and perseverance will serve as a model for generations to come.
Dr. Holland was preceded in death by his father; Glen Holland and brother; Colonel Gregory Holland.
He is survived by his two sons, Taylor Holland and Nick Holland; daughter, Bailey Holland Baker (Brett); loving Mother, Nancy Smith Holland; his brother Kevin Holland (Sandra); sister-in-law Dawn Holland; significant other Alison McGriff; step-children Dylan Smith, Graysen Smith (Ashley), Gregory Smith (Rachel), Morgan Smith and many loving step-grandchildren; Marissa Wilhite, Landen Smith, Roman Smith, Masen and Halle Smith, Jamison and Quinley Smith.
A visitation will be held at Moss Service Funeral Home Wednesday September 3, 2025, from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. A mass service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Thursday September 4, 2025, at 10 a.m.
