Arvis Wendell Freeman, age 83, of St. Augustine, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, at the Bailey Family Center for Caring with his family by his side. Born on June 5, 1941, in Cullman, Alabama, he was the son of Loyd and Sillie Mae Freeman. Arvis was raised in the close-knit community of Cold Springs, Alabama where he graduated with the class of 1959 from Cold Springs High School. He served his country in the US Army National Guard during the Vietnam conflict.
Arvis met the love of his life, Nell Freeman, on a blind date that turned into a love story spanning 64 beautiful years of marriage. Together, they built a life grounded in love, family, and shared dreams.
Arvis began his professional career as an electrician, later discovering a passion for real estate. He owned and operated Freeman Real Estate and, eventually, Freeman Appraisal Company which he operated successfully for many years. Beyond his career, Arvis lived life fully and joyfully. He was a devoted Alabama football fan (Roll Tide!), a lover of motorcycles and Corvettes, and travels to Alaska and the national parks. He was a member of the Lions Club of Cullman. After his retirement he moved to St. Augustine in 1993. Arvis enjoyed gathering with his group of friends at McDonald’s, where they would sit for hours, solving the world’s problems-one biscuit at a time. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Arvis was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Sillie Mae, and his brother, Eugene. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Nell Freeman; his daughters, Leigh Flanigan of Jacksonville and Janet (Robert) Swandol of Tallahassee; a brother, Donnie Mack Freeman; and grandchildren, Taylor Johns of Cullman, Abbie Johns of Jacksonville and Conner Swandol of Tallahassee.
