Obituary: Charles Roy James

CMSGT USAF Ret. Charles Roy James passed away at his home in Montgomery, AL surrounded by his caring family on Oct. 17, 2022. CMSGT James was born on Aug. 27th, 1932, in Cullman, Alabama to Isom and Ellen James. He grew up in Cullman, Alabama with his parents, brother and sisters. In 1948, he joined the US Air Force where he was stationed in Europe and North Africa. He served for four years and returned home to Cullman. He reentered the USAF in 1955, served and eventually retired at Maxwell AFB at the rank of CMSGT in September 1977. During his service, he obtained his undergraduate and master’s degrees in education. After retiring from the USAF, he began his career with the State of Alabama and retired again 20 years.

In 1954, Charles married Barbara Johnson of Cullman, Alabama. During his military service, he and his family were stationed in Texas, Georgia, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, England and Germany. Charles and Barbara enjoyed the military life were happily married over sixty years.

He is survived by his sons: Charles jr. (Valerie) and John (Christina); his grandchildren: Allison Daugherty (Shawn), Cade James, Collen James and Cooper James; his great grandchildren: Avery Daugherty and Marshall Daugherty; his nieces and nephews; and his sister-in-law: Amanda Johnson Williamson. He is preceded by his wife: Barbara; parents: Isom and Ellen James; brother: Wallace; and sisters Pauline and Christine.

He will be interred at the National Cemetery in Montevallo, Alabama.
