Billy Ray Weissend Sr., 78, passed away on October 19, 2021, in Olathe, KS. His battle with injuries sustained from a recent fall showed how strong of a man he really was. Even though Billy is no longer with us, he leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, hard work, discipline and family.

Billy loved all things involving hunting, fishing, football and most of all, his family. Nothing made him happier than playing with his grandkids, or great-grandkids, at a massive family get together at Grandpa Joe’s house.

Professionally, Billy was a 1st Class operating engineer and started the job as Veterans of Foreign Wars Facilities Manager in Washington D.C., until he was promoted to director of VFW Properties in Kansas City, MO.  He then relocated his family to Kansas. He was with the VFW for 29 years, and the last Vietnam Veteran to serve as a director at the VFW.

Billy’s celebration of life service will be held on November 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Temple Baptist Church (30 Co Rd. 1184, Cullman, AL 35057).

He was preceded in death by his father: Joseph Earl Weissend; mother: Sarah Nancy Tucker Weissend and his brother: Earl Weissend.

Billy is survived by his loving wife of 32 years: Toni Chasteen Weissend; five children: Nancy Weissend, Brandy Weissend, Jenny (Kevin) Doss, Chad Weissend and Billy (Katie Rose) Weissend Jr.; seven brothers: Jerry (Paula) Weissend, Robert Weissend, Wayne (Margaret) Weissend, Sidney (Sandy) Weissend, Ricky (Betty) Weissend, Tommy (Belinda) Weissend and Michael (Dorothy) Weissend; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Billy’s ashes will be spread at the family farm in one of the ponds he grew up swimming and fishing in as a young boy.
