Obituary: Belva Sue Rushing Calvert

Belva Sue Rushing Calvert, 89, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 21, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in Cullman, AL, the only child of Onnie and Opal Guthery Rushing, where she spent her childhood. She married Cecil Leonard Calvert Feb. 17, 1949. She raised her three children and spent her married life happily in Haleyville, AL as a loving wife, mother, homemaker, and caring friend. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Vestavia Hills, AL in 1995, where she lived out the remainder of her years, enjoying time as a grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is proceeded in death by her parents, husband and grandson Michael Shaw Hyde.

She was a devoted member of the Church of Christ, a proud wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend to all. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and spending time with her family. She was the beloved matriarch of a large family who will miss her gentle spirit, Southern charm and class, kind soul, and loving heart.

She is survived by her daughter Anita Calvert Hyde (Michael) of Vestavia Hills, AL and two sons Chester Charles Calvert (Kay) and Richard Hollis Calvert, both of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren Nathan Calvert Hyde (Joy), Tiffany Calvert, Reed Hudson (Melinda), Nat Calvert (Laura), Katie Hyde, Alex Hyde, Mary Taylor Hyde (Lane), Mackenzie Calvert, and Greer Calvert; and great-grandchildren Tanner Shaw Bailey, Nathan Hyde, Jr., Parker Hyde, Preston Lane Todd, Kane Hudson, Damian McCrickard, Joshua Hudson, Isaac Vogler, and Jesse Calvert (due in April), along with a host of extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020 at 4 p.m. at Moss Service Funeral Home located at 1901 2nd Ave. NW, Cullman, Alabama, 35055. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2020 at 11 a.m. with burial following at Prospect Church of Christ on County Road 222 at Guthery’s Crossroads in Cullman County. Mrs. Calvert will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband and parents. She will be greatly missed, but those who love her rejoice in her peace and comfort in the presence with the Lord.
