Charles E. Howell, 88, of Vinemont, left his earthly life and entered his eternal home with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 24, at Woodland Village HealthCare Center following a long struggle caused by a stroke suffered in October 2018.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Edgar Howell and Hallie Mae Curtis Howell, first wife Alma Ilene Howell, and granddaughter, Delinda Marie Coleman.

He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Charlotte Jane Howell of Vinemont; daughter, Charlene Howell Johnston and her husband, Eric, of Lacey’s Spring, AL; sister Lilly Arnold of Orlando, FL; granddaughter Holly Elizabeth Moulder and her husband, Tyler, of Madison, AL; grandson Timothy Johnston II and his wife, Destini, of Arab, AL; plus stepchildren, Robert T. Barry and wife Angela, Raymond Barry and wife Diane, Rick Barry, Carol Hulsey and husband David, and their children and grandchildren.

Charles retired from the Cullman Wal-Mart Distribution Center. In retirement, he often spent his days at Cullman Regional Medical Center, where he worked as a volunteer.

Always alert for opportunities to make children smile, Charles was affectionately known to children as “The Candy Man” because of his habit of carrying candy to give to children at church and elsewhere. He was also known for his enjoyment of cowboy movies and western novels. He often kept a paperback handy.
