(Update) Shooting near New Caanan leaves 1 dead

NEW CAANAN - A shooting near the community of New Caanan has left one person dead. The incident happened Monday night at approximately 8 p.m.

Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick identified the victim as Joshua Adam White, 35, of Guntersville.

Details were scarce Monday evening, but the Cullman County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday morning that White died after being transported to Huntsville Hospital.

In a statement, the CCSO said it received a 911 call just before 8 p.m. Monday night about an altercation at a residence near the Cullman County, Marshall County and Blount County lines. During the initial investigation, CCSO investigators learned that one individual had shot another individual at the residence.

"We are in the early stages of our investigative process and I ask the public's patience as we investigate. We will work closely with the District Attorney's Office throughout the investigative process. The case will then be turned over to the DA's Office for a final determination of prosecution," said Sheriff Matt Gentry.

This is an ongoing investigation. The CCSO said it will release more information tomorrow as it becomes available.
