(Update) CPD says wife injured, husband died of self-inflicted gunshot

CULLMAN, Ala. – A husband is dead and his wife injured following a shooting at a home on the southeast side of the city of Cullman in the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, April 12. Cullman Police Chief Kenny Culpepper said his department received the call around midnight.

Cullman County Coroner Jeremy L. Kilpatrick on Sunday identified the deceased as Miles Timothy Dunkin, 56, of Cullman.

On Monday, Cullman Police Sgt. Intae Suh said the incident occurred at 1315 Kim Lane SE.

Suh identified the wife as Shelly Marie Dunkin, 42.

In a media release, Suh said, “Officers arrived on scene and made contact with Shelly Marie Dunkin, 42, inside the residence of 1315 Kim Lane SE.  Mrs. Dunkin had suffered a gunshot wound to her face. Officers on scene also found her husband Miles Timothy Dunkin in the kitchen deceased with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. (Cullman) EMS arrived on scene and Mrs. Dunkin was taken to UAB by helicopter.”

Shelly Dunkin has since been discharged from the hospital.

“This is an ongoing investigation and at this time there is no danger to the public,” said Suh. “We may release more information on the investigation at a later date.”
