Obituary: Maebell Wilhite Apel

Maebell Wilhite Apel, 100, of 504 12th Street S.E. Cullman, Alabama passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020. A private graveside service was held on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at Cullman City Cemetery, Rev. John Bussman officiating, with Moss Service Funeral Home in charge. Mrs. Apel was born March 6, 1920, parents Calvin Henry Wilhite and Zella Mae Linton. She was a member of 1st Baptist Church, Vinemont for 20 years. She united with St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in 1941 when she married Arthur Henry Apel. They enjoyed 65 years of married life. She taught Sunday School, was a member of the choir and served as Accountant and Office Administrator at Apel Machine & Supply Co., Inc. for 38 years, until her retirement in 2000. Mrs. Apel believed every child should have the opportunity to learn. She served 15 years on the City School Board. This was during the building of the main High School and football stadium. Mrs. Apel devoted a lot of time to the band. At the beginning of Crusade for Cancer she served as chairman of both County and City. Mrs. Apel’s winning smile and friendliness were shown at home and at the “Apel Inn”, a cottage on Guntersville Lake. She hosted the CHS Band Football Team, Childhaven children, Star Club and numerous swim parties. She received the Good Neighbor Award and served as Superintendent of Sunday School service held at Guntersville Yacht Club for 1 year. Mrs. Apel was preceded in death by her husband, parents and three sisters: Frances Nearen, Marie Goff and Freida Perry. Survivors: 2 Sons, Ronald H. Apel (Cheri) and John F. Apel (Marie); 1 Daughter Cheri Dalgleish, 8 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-great Grandchild. Sisters; Dorothy Duke (Charles) and Saundra Duke (Frank); 1 Brother, Larry Wilhite (Gladys). The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any memorials be sent to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
