PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders top Fairview 77-66, Lady Aggies hold off Good Hope 42-31; Tuesday scoring recap

FAIRVIEW, Ala. – After sweeping Cold Springs on the road Monday night, the Fairview Aggies and Lady Aggies returned home to host Good Hope in a pair of varsity showdowns. The Lady Aggies fought out a 42-31 win over Good Hope while the Raiders edged the Aggies 77-66. Good Hope will be back in action Friday night when it travels to face Ashville and Fairview will be back home Friday to take on Oneonta.

Fairview 42 – Good Hope 31 (varsity girls)

The Lady Aggies jumped out to an early lead in Tuesday’s matchup against the Lady Raiders, but an Ivey Maddox bucket trimmed the lead to 14-9 going into the second quarter. Fairview maintained a 16-12 lead early in the second and a basket by Molly McKelvy stretched it to 20-14 midway through the period. Good Hope battled back late in the quarter and a layup from Rudi Derrick cut the Lady Aggies lead down to 23-21 going into the halftime break.

Heather Tetro got a floater to drop early in the third to make it a 25-23 game with Fairview in front but a layup from Savanna Derrick tied the game at 25 with five minutes to play in the period. Emma Garcia put the Lady Aggies back on top 27-25 with a basket midway through the third and McKelvy knocked down a three to extend the lead to 32-26 with 1:30 to play until the fourth quarter. Payton Golden drilled a jumper with less than a minute in the third and Fairview went into the final frame with a 36-27 advantage over Good Hope.

Neither team could get many shots to fall in the fourth but a basket from Katie Ball put the Lady Aggies in front 40-29 with four minutes remaining. Savannah Derrick knocked down a free throw to trim the lead to 40-31 with under two minutes to play but a pair of Manasco free throws with 38 seconds put Fairview up by 11 and the Lady Aggies held on to win it 42-31.

Manasco and Garcia each led Fairview with nine points, McKelvy posted eight, Maddie Yeager added six and Jaycee Aleman finished with four in the win. Rudi Derrick led Good Hope with nine points in the loss, followed by Savanna Derrick with six and Abby Neighbors and Tetro who each finished with five.

Good Hope 77 – Fairview 66 (varsity boys)

The Aggies took an early 5-2 lead in the opening quarter after Dow Nichols banked in a three at the top of the key but an and-one play by Michael Lowe trimmed the Fairview lead to 7-5 midway through the first. Jack Brown nailed a three-pointer to put the Aggies on top 10-5 later in the first and with two minutes to play in the period, Dawson Turner and Peyton Bailey exchanges threes to make it a 15-13 game with the Raiders in front and a minute to play in the first. Good Hope led things 16-13 by the start of the second.

A big put-back by Austin Turner gave Fairview an 18-16 lead early in the second but a floater from Lowe put the Raiders back in front 22-21 just a couple minutes into the quarter. Cole Maddox got a shot to fall midway through the second to put Good Hope in front 28-26 but a three on the other end from Sawyer Daniel gave the Aggies a 1-point lead. J.T. White added another basket late in the quarter that gave Fairview a 33-32 lead, but the Raiders ended the half on a 6-2 scoring run and led the way 38-35 at the break.

It was more of the same when the second half started as both teams looked to make a huge run to take control of the contest. A Dawson Turner trey, followed by an Eli Phares layup, helped stretch the Raider lead to 48-40. Two free throws by Austin Turner and a shot made by Daniel cut the deficit to 48-44, but another Dawson Turner three and a layup by Lowe made it 53-44 with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. Fairview finished the quarter strong with a 7-2 run that cut the deficit to just four at 55-51 going into the final period.

Another Daniel made shot made it 55-53 to start out the fourth, but Good Hope went on an 11-0 run that ended with another triple from Turner and the Raiders pushed their lead to double digits for the first time in the game at 66-53. An Austin Jackson three made it a 69-60 contest, but the Aggies never got closer than that the rest of the way and the Raiders wound up pulling away in the fourth to take the game 77-66.

Cole Maddox led all scorers with 33 points in the win, Lowe added 17, Turner finished with and Phares posted nine. Daniel led the Aggies with 16 points in the loss, followed by Turner with 15, Jackson with 11, White with 10 and Nichols with eight.
