CULLMAN, Ala. – The clock is ticking for local lotharios and dutiful spouses to finalize Valentine’s Day plans. We explore various options on differing budgets for couples in Cullman.

On a slim budget of $25 or less

Most people I know, when given the choice, will opt for Duchess doughnuts over the most decadent chocolate in the world. Grab a couple of your partner’s favorite doughnuts. Then, get out of your comfort zone and write a whimsical haiku or sonnet. Head down to The Stampin’ Elephant in Hanceville or another craft store and buy a couple of pieces of themed scrapbook paper. Write out your masterful words on the paper and cut it out in a heart shape. Roll it up and tie a string or ribbon around it. Run by a florist, buy a single rose and slide it between the paper and ribbon. You’re a real Romeo now…just don’t drink the poison.

For a budget of $25-$100

Add more doughnuts and flowers and go out to dinner at Hanks or The Downtown Grill. Better yet, present a gift certificate for a manicure along with the doughnuts and flowers. Or a massage gift certificate. Just don’t forget the doughnuts.

Big spenders of $100 or more

The usual route is dinner at The All Steak, flowers and a gift in a small box with either Ed White’s or Doug Doggett’s name on it. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s nice. Again, doughnuts.

Another option would be a night out to Goat Island Brewing for Valentine’s dinner with entertainment by the Avenue G Band. During the meal you could present your date with a certificate noting you have donated to charity in his or her honor. For only $125 you can sponsor a child with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to receive one book a month from birth until the child enters kindergarten. What a precious gift for everyone!
