HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The ladies of the Hanceville Nursing and Rehab Red Hat Society (RHS) were all smiles Friday morning as they sat outside in their finest red hats. The ladies had spent the last weeks working on their latest community project – collecting items to donate to the Cullman County Animal Shelter. The items were delivered to the shelter by staff late Friday morning.

Hanceville Nursing and Rehab activities director Shirley Hays helped the ladies start their own chapter of the Red Hat Society about six months ago. She said, “It’s an organization to get together and give back to the community. This time, we picked the animal shelter.”

Vera Albertson, a resident and member of the RHS, explained their decision to help the animals. She said, “My granddaughter owns Prestigious Pets and she got everybody into it.” All the ladies love animals and were split evenly over which they love more, cats or dogs.

Ms. Ruth Brigham was passionate in her response as to why she wanted to help the animal shelter. “To help these lonely, forgotten, ill-cared for, abandoned and lovely animals that will be your friend forever. I don’t know how you could not love a dog. You’ve got a friend forever,” she explained.

The ladies collected a variety of items for the shelter including food, treats, litter, blankets and cleaning products. The RHS members urged family members, friends and staff to donate to their efforts. They hope to meet soon to determine their next project for the upcoming holiday season.
